Latin name: Apis Mellifera

Common name: European Honey Bee

Insect family: Apis, order hymenoptera

Date/Location of specimen: July 2005 on a Hollyhock in my garden in Akron

Description: primarily distinguished by the production and storage of honey and the construction of perennial, colonial nests from wax. Honey bees are the only extant members of the tribe Apini, all in the genus Apis. No Apis species existed in the New World during human times before the introduction of A. mellifera by Europeans. 1

Pest/Disease & Gardening Limitations: Beneficial for pollination. The worst predator for Honey Bees is the Varroa Mite. Varroa Mites are tiny arachnids (spider cousins). Varroa Mites weaken the Honey Bee’s immune system, which makes them vulnerable to diseases. 2
